Tätigkeitsbeschreibung

Thermal analysis and test engineer at Airbus DS (Friedrichshafen):

• Thermal modelling & analysis of instruments, sub-components, test set-ups or complete satellites. Hand calculations and advanced modelling using Systema-Thermica and Esatan softwares.

• Design of thermal systems (hardware design). Materials, geometry, I/Fs, etc, are under evaluation in this kind of tasks.

• Test plan & test procedure writing, assuring that the requirements specified by the clients are fulfilled through the incoming test campaign.

• Test predictions are developed to provide a first estimation of temperatures, phases durations, etc, to be expected during the test. The predictive model is correlated lately with respect to obtained results from test, so a more realistic model is obtained. This corrected model is able to provide a quite accurate prediction of the behaviour of the hardware in fly operation conditions.

• Test surveillance. Test performance is under the control of the thermal engineer, who is the responsible of assuring hardware integrity and the fulfilment of all test requirements. In this direction, operation of the equipment (chamber, chillers, power supplies, TQCM, etc) is under the responsibility of the thermal engineer. Tests are typically performed inside Thermal Vacuum chambers, using thermometry, thermography, internal or external cooling devices, optical measurement devices, power supplies, contamination control elements, or even mechanical load, vibration and stress control devices.

• Test data post-processing. Results obtained from tests must be analysed and post-processed, to determine if the hardware performance is according to the predictions and compliant with the requirements and to correlate the test predictions.

• Test reports writing: post-processed data are also presented within a test report, to explain in detail the observed behaviour of the hardware and to finally determine whether it is compliant with our customer´s requirements.

Tätigkeitsbeschreibung

Test engineer at IberEspacio (spatial thermal control systems), with full test engineering responsibility (Assembly, Integration & Test):

• Responsible for previous engineering (i.e. tooling design, integration of sample and test set-up, acquisition systems configuration, sample instrumentation, test procedures writing, test technicians coordination and supervision, etc.).
• Supervision & performance of test (control of test bench, test levels, acquisition systems, and hardware itself during test).
• Data processing, analysis, interpretation and presentation to client through specific documentation and meetings.

Tests (typicality, thermal or mechanical -static or dynamic- test, but other types can be carried out) are performed in order to determine if the test specimen meets the duty conditions requirements. Test specimen can be representative coupons, complete hardware parts or a complete thermal control system.

Thermal tests (thermal balance in ambient or vacuum, conductance test, performance tests, etc) are normally performed at IberEspacio premises, using our thermal climatic or vacuum chambers, IR cameras, thermometry, etc.

Mechanical tests can be executed internally, such as static test (bending tests of satellites panels, heat pipes, scratching tests, bonding resistance tests, etc.) but dynamic tests (vibration, shock) are performed at external premises with our supervision.

Additionally, I have to use advanced thermal & mechanical analysis techniques to foresee the performances of hardware during test and to enhance the set-up design. This implies working side by side with mechanical and thermal analysis engineers in case of advanced software is required during analysis (Nastran, Thermica, Systema, Ansys, Ecosim, etc).

Moreover, participation in R&D projects to develop new designs in order to improve current technologies in double-phase thermal heat transfer systems.

As a professor:

Professor at Carlos III University of Madrid (2014-2015 academic year). Thermal Engineering and Fluid Mechanics Department subjects which I have taught:

• Thermal Engineering. Thermodynamic cycles, thermodynamics, heat engines, refrigeration machines, basic heat transfer. Second year subject (6 ECTS) at Bachelor of Industrial Technology Engineering, Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, Bachelor of Electronics and Automation and Bachelor of Electric Engineering.

• Heat Transfer. Advanced heat transfer. Third year subject (6 ECTS) at Bachelor of Industrial Technology Engineering and Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering.

• Moreover, tutor of two Bachelor Final Thesis, around electronic instrumentation and thermodynamic characterization of modified turbocharger test bench. One with maximum qualification (distinction) obtained.

As a researcher:

I worked actively within ITEA research group as an official researcher. This group is leaded by Antonio Lecuona and Pedro Rodríguez Doctors and is composed by several technology specialists with extensive experience.
Research lines: heat engines, turbomachinery, absorption chillers, refrigeration, heat exchangers, renewable energy, solar cooling, thermal power plants, heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics.

Project 1. “Humidity Optimization Tool” (Clean Sky - 7th European Framework Programme). Performed tasks:
• Electronic instrumentation & pneumatic elements design for test bench based on a dedicated modified turbocharger .
• Characterization of air-water mixture spatial distribution with optic methods (particle size, spatial density)
• Psychometric and thermodynamic characterization of pressurized air - gradually humidified flow passing through various turbomachinery.

Project 2. “Variosol”: development of a new and revolutionary absorption machine concept, integrating solar collector on vapour generator by falling film technique. Prototype is under construction.
